Does Mixed Reality bridge the gap of missing milestones?
We're bullish on the whole mixed reality scene. Not only from a gaming perspective - but as a tool for human connection in an increasingly fragmented world.
So, I asked the question: Is there a story that showcases how VR has helped, rather than hindered being there for a milestone?
You bet there is.
An 83 year old man with dementia celebrated his birthday virtually hiking through Glacier National Park - alongside his wife, who was in another state receiving treatment of her own.
Despite the physical limitations, VR enabled the couple to rekindle old memories, and most importantly - not miss a milestone.
Why is this important, or relevant?
Instead of this only focusing on not missing a milestone - the session was able to vividly bring back fond memories of their real-life experiences.
See where I am going with this?
Mixed Reality and real life are in fact - integrated. VR can and is used as a tool to better life in the real world... It triggered recognition of familiar environments and reduced agitation of being apart.
Whether it's shared nostalgia or emotional intimacy - You're able to "be there" without physically being there. The same emotions were felt with walking through the national park - albeit without the pulled hamstring I would no doubt feel after 500m in.
Things are changing rapidly these days.
VR technology is shown to preserve presence, presence of across distance, time - and even ability.
What's not to love about that?
