Geez the news is a hard read these days. WW3 aside, I found the Trump Government’s demands on Anthropic of particular interest:
1. Will Anthropic cede and drop its guardrails?
2. What other public or private companies is the government using for defence? (… or offence, as it were)
3. Are there currently any VR/XR use cases in military?
The guardrails seem reasonable – mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous lethal weapons, from what I understand.
From a VR perspective, mass domestic surveillance via every pair of Meta Ray-Bans would be quite the data source… a dystopian cross over between Orwell’s 1984 and The Matrix.Fully autonomous lethal weapons? That’s basically like playing Halo and actual people die. Frightening stuff.
To the obvious question – is this actually happening? That’s harder to answer. There are signs, like the Creator of Oculus VR is now working for US Defence Tech company – Anduril Industries, as an example.
What does Anduril do? It specialises in developing advanced autonomous systems powered by AI, robotics, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking.
So, whilst it’s not my place, nor am I intelligent enough to engage in a discussion about what’s right or wrong – it is something that I think we should be aware of, as a community interested in VR.
